Australian startup Beehive – crowd funding 3D printed eyewear

Australian startup Beehive are crowd funding a “design your own 3D printed eyewear” interface.

Beehives 3D Printed Eyewear

The Beehive team of industrial designers and engineers (including Engineers Without Borders founder Daniel Almagor) are branching into online design interfaces.

The website, which is under development , will let anybody jump into the design process, creating a unique eyewear design that will be 3D printed.

“We were inspired by the Spore Creature Creator to make eyewear design fun and intuitive”, said Adam Long, co-founder of Beehive.

“You can change the shape, style, and pattern of the eyewear and then upload an image or text to emboss into the frames.”

“You can even upload an image of yourself to try on the style. When you’re ready, hit “go” and we 3D print them for you.”

3D printing is an exciting rapid manufacturing technology that was made famous by an Economist article earlier in the year showing a 3D printed working reproduction of a Stradivarius violin.

“When you print on paper the ink has a tiny bit of height above the page. If you printed the same thing on the same page again and again it would stack up. So instead of ink, we use plastics and metals to create amazing new objects – including eyewear!” said Adam.

Rapid Manufacturing – making custom affordable

3D printed limb3D printing is paving the way for the innovative creation of products for the fraction of the cost and the time of traditional manufacturing methods.
The movement from manual labour to creating products by utilizing printing technology is allowing for the customization of products by incorporating specialized features and an array of materials. Through 3D Printing, Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing systems there is a rise in the manufacturing of consumer goods, helping to expand and revive industries. Mass production is giving way to customized products such as lamps, iPhone cases and clothing.
American design company Bespoke Innovations is utilizing 3D printing for the creation of prosthetic limbs. They have built a scanning tool which examines limbs and then sends a detailed image to a computer, beginning the process for the sculpting of a custom prosthetic limb through 3D Printing systems. These designer body parts can be wrapped in leather, metal or any other desired materials.
Rapid Manufacturing is continuing to help personalize products and place creativity and ingenuity at the forefront of design.

BFB releases AXON 2.0 (beta)

Bits from Bytes have released a new version of there 3D slicing software which is used with the Rapman 3.1 and BFB 3000 Plus. The new software is still in Beta mode however it is much improved over the original Axom which shipped with BFB 3D printers previously. The new software has a much improved interface, the window can be scaled and run full screen (the most annoying aspect of the original Axon) and it has very easy to use controls and functions.

The 3D representation of the print bed and 3D files is heaps better, and configuring your machine and the print profiles is much more controllable, especially for multi head BFB 3000′s.

Autodesk releases free 3D CAD application

Autodesk have just launched a public beta of there new free 3D modeling application called Autodesk 123D. The new software looks as though its targeted at newbie 3D modellers (hence the name). At first glance its looks pretty good and from what we can tell it’s based heavily on the Inventor platform… it even has basic 2D technical drawing cabilities which we think is a bit silly when your just going to send your 3D file straight to your 3D printer anyway (unless you want to laser cut them).

Speaking of which Autodesk 123D can output .STL files so you can 3D print your parts on just about any 3D printer out there, including the open source rep rap style machines (we think this may have been one of the core focuses of the software). Its a bit more advanced than Google sketch up but no where near as powerful as a professional 3D CAD system. Still the interface looks great and for people who are just getting into 3D CAD its great to be able to point them to a free application to get started.

You can download the software from here www.123dapp.com

Affordable 3D Scanning App for iPhone

Trimensional is an affordable 3D Scanning iPhone App that was released early 2011. Trimensional enables your iPhone to create 3D scans using only the light from the iPhone’s screen and the front camera. The idea is that you crank up the brightness on your screen, stand very still in a dark room and scan yourself. That doesn’t sound weird at all?

Trimensional the 3D Scanning app is available via iTunes in two separate levels. The basic level allows you to create the 3D scans and email them to your friends as Movie’s or animated GIF’s. The second upgrade level enables you to export the Scans as 3D Models and allows you to 3D Print your scans.
